Brazilian Keratin Treatment/Brazilian Blow-out- should you be worried??
Yes! Absolutely. You should be very worried. The Brazilian Blow-out is banned in Brazil and other countries, for a reason.
So many women are using this treatment to make your hair look smoother, and stylists are using it to make good money. So what’s the problem? You love it, your stylist loves it..
There is a big problem. This product has killed a woman (client) in Brazil, and has since been banned in Brazil. The amount of Formaldehyde that is showing up in our treatments in the US, are 100 times the “safe” limit according the the doctor in this CBS news video. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=3414419n&tag=related;photovideo.
You may or may not be aware of the toxic active ingredient- Formaldehyde. Some brands will list it as this, and some are claiming to be free of this cancer causing ingredient, but include Aldehyde, which is derived from Formaldehyde. It’s a component broken down out of it’s natural state that ,when exposed to high heat during the process of the hair treatment, will in fact return to it’s natural Formaldehyde state. Just as certain hair colors that claim to be ammonia free, when the developer and color mix and oxidize, it becomes ammonia again.
I can tell you these treatments market themselves as “Chemical Free”. As a stylist, I have seen salons and stylist claim it, and seen the chemical filled treatments they use first hand.
I know of one, there may be more out there, that do not contain any forms of Formaldehyde. Feedback from stylists who have used the treatment is not that positive. Some say it just doesn’t work.
So, when you consider the craze, that I imagine will evolve into something much less dangerous, consider your health. Consider the industry that wants to make a quick (couple hundred) dollar from this service.
Yes there are results, but a lot of bad things feel good.
Stylists:
Be aware of what you and those around you are using. The stylist is at a much greater risk then the client because the gas is being directed more in your air supply, and you may be doing this multiple times a month.
